A.G is an East London institution. The phrase ‘multidisciplinary artist’ doesn’t even begin to describe the pivotal role the Hackney-born DJ, producer, curator and designer has played in shaping the sounds of the city that moulded her and the world beyond it.
Born and bred in Grime’s heartlands, it was inevitable that A.G would go on to not simply play but pioneer within the homegrown genre, bursting onto the Pirate Radio scene in 2009 with ‘The MnM Show’. Soon became the go-to radio show for the scene with her unique mixing / talk-show format, guests performed on a varied selection of instrumentals as well as engaging in a playful talk show element.
Taking the show across stations – including NTS, she led the way as the first woman to host Rinse FM’s flagship radio show ‘The Grime Show’ before ending her decade long reign on the airwaves to further evolve
as a DJ, becoming notorious for fast paced multi genre and multi deck sets.
Whilst honing her craft over the past thirteen years, A.G has built a formidable reputation within wider circles of electronic music. The eclecticism and forward thinking that initially set her apart as a DJ proved to, again, be her secret weapon when it came to making her own music. A natural evolution of her artistry, A.G’s production style is much like one of her sets – impossible to categorise and equally impossible not to dance to. Pulling influence from foundational sounds of Grime, Garage, Dance and UK Drill with old school R&B and Hip Hop, there is no single figure or subculture to draw comparisons to when it comes to A.G. Rather, the vast experience, knowledge and connection with the music she draws influence from allows her to master and manipulate it to the point of recognition – quite simply because she makes and plays the music she wants to listen to. Be warned, once you hear an A.G production – you won’t forget it.
As the sounds of the city ebb and flow, one thing is for certain – A.G captures the zeitgeist no other. A staple on the London circuit and regularly on the line-up for some of the hottest parties in town; A.G expertly fuses both the nostalgic and the niche to bring listeners and partygoers into her world through her seamless blending and ever-intriguing track selection. These principles – implemented across her production as well as her DJing – have not gone unnoticed, earning her a nomination for DJ Mag’s ‘Best Breakthrough Producer’ in 2021 & Resident Advisors “Best Tracks of 2021” off the back of a marathon twenty releases in a year.
Her 2022 EP ‘GML’ was released on Night Slugs sister label AP Life, a vocal debut that served as a fitting reminder of A.G’s status as a seasoned tastemaker and DJ – calling upon the likes of Manga St Hilare, Taliwhoah and St.Plates to each jump upon an A.G riddim. It’s here that A.G’s peerless mastery shines, in a nod to the communal culture of riddims that both emphasised the importance of quality production and provided artists with a level playing field to show off their lyrical prowess.
In addition to her hefty production credits, A.G’s unique position as a trailblazer as well as an experienced industry professional has seen her curate & host workshops & events, collaborating with household names. Collaboration is something that comes naturally to her, playing shows and holding down a NTS residency as 1/2 of powerhouse duo ‘Beauty Blender’ alongside fellow icon Manara, as well as being a resident DJ and host of ‘Cousins’, one of the city’s most eclectic underground nights.
Although East London at heart, A.G has set her sights on world domination with cross-continental bookings across Ethiopia, Uganda, North America and India. Whether it’s New Cross or New Delhi, she’s guaranteed to shell a set and leave people hungry for more.
As informed as she is however, A.G’s power lies in her unfettered appetite for experimentation – taking a risk that will always pay off not least due to her technical aptitude on the decks as much as her sonic, cultural and historical apprehension.
