Halvcirkel
“a profound testament to their artistry and innovation”
– Classical Post
“they’re listening in a very special way. There’s a give and take which feels like they’re improvising together. They are not executing a score, they’re giving the music”
– The Wire
Halvcirkel is a Danish string trio founded in Copenhagen in 2015, consisting of violist Mika Persdotter, violinist Bettina Marie Ezaki, and cellist Nicole Hogstrand.
In 2024, Halvcirkel signed with FatCat Records’ modern classical imprint 130701 to release their first album of entirely original compositions, titled ‘Vida.’ The album showcases the group’s creative evolution, incorporating techniques like col legno and pizzicato to craft sonic portraits of Nordic landscapes, evoking the wild beauty of Denmark, Sweden and Iceland. Their sound is marked by the intricate interplay of their instruments, which blend seamlessly to create a dynamic musical dialogue driven by contrast, tension and resolution. The compositions on ‘Vida’ echo the influence of key figures in modern classical and post-classical music such as Brian Eno, Craig Leon, Arvo Pärt and Terry Riley.
Halvcirkel’s body of work is as diverse as their artistic philosophy. They have reimagined works by composers such as Dmitri Shostakovich and Philip Glass and collaborated with artists across musical disciplines including Henrik Lindstrand, Signe Lykke, Hania Rani and undertaken commissions for Denmark’s National Gallery in 2023.
Their work reflects a contemporary take on classical music, balancing tradition with experimentation and inviting listeners into a world of rich textures and artistic exploration.
