The body of work that Chilean-born interdisciplinary artist Matias Aguayo has made over the years defies conventional classification. Thanks to his idiosyncratic approach, it has allowed him to forge a unique artistic path, leaving a distinctive and indelible mark in every discipline he explores.

Throughout his career, Aguayo has fused electronic music, performance, theater, art, composition, and community outreach into a fun-yet-profound singular vision that continue to expand. Each project bears his unmistakable brand of humor and avant-garde spirit. Now based in Mexico City, Aguayo presents his latest album, Anenoa, which further explores his musical curiosities.

Born in 1973 in Santiago de Chile, Chile, Aguayo has built an influential discography that includes Are You Really Lost? (2005), Ay Ay Ay (2009), and The Visitor (2013). While these records have helped him make his mark, it’s onstage where his talents really shine through.

Breaking down the barrier between performer and audience, Aguayo has perfected the art of the DJ set, engaging with the crowd and getting everyone excited. His most celebrated live format is an expanded show that feature backup vocalists, dancers, and percussionists to deliver euphoric experiences for attendees. These performing collaborators are usually involved in the local scene where Aguayo is performing.

Anenoa marks the next step in Aguayo’s evolution, a feel-good yet experimental electronic album that embraces unpolished sounds to create music that invites chaos in, in the best possible way. Driven by groove and lighthearted charm, the record unfolds as a vibrant, no-skips masterpiece.

Aguayo is also well known for his collaborations with artists such as Michael Mayer, DJ Spoko, Dirk Leyers (as Closer Musik), and Battles, as well as recent work with Deena Abdelwahed, Lucrecia Dalt, and Julianna. In 2009, he co-founded the Cómeme label, which made a huge impact in the electronic music world by bringing forth talented Latin American artists such as Rebolledo, Ana Helder, Sano, and Alejandro Paz, among others, as well as his own material.

As an artist, he has been involved with major art institutions. He has also been an official collaborator of Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, Casa Del Lago in CDMX, and Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral in Santiago de Chile. His collaborations with director Oliver Fredj and Paris’s Théâtre du Châtelet for works like Krush (2024), Flouz (2023) and WATCH (2022), are socially-engaging works where detainees performed as actors in an effort to raise social awareness for prison reform.

Social outreach has remained a constant in Aguayo’s artistic life. His work spans homeless shelters, retirement homes, prison outreach, and hospitals like the Pitié-Salpêtrière. Projects like BumBumBox and Nueva Red De Bailadores reclaim dance as a political and communal act in public spaces, merging his artistic vision with a broader commitment to social change.
