Saint Jude is the alias of South London songwriter and producer Jude Woodhead. Jude found himself drawn to songwriting after Tinnitus prevented him from pursuing an early love for club-focused electronic music. In November 2022 Jude released ‘Signal’ a self produced LP enlisting Grime legends, underground LA rappers and Polish/Indonesian dream folk singers. The LP received critical acclaim and praise, NME calling it “a beautiful, blistering debut from south London’s producer of the moment”, receiving noteworthy reviews from the likes of LoBF 8*, Clash 7* and becoming a favourite from indie retailers such as brighton’s Resdient Records, Drift and Norman. The release also saw support from digital retailers such as Bandcamp, Spotify , Apple music and deezer.
Signal was a statement of intent. Jude has found his voice: evolving from a young artist with clear influences to a weaver of disparate worlds. The album cements Jude’s journey as one of the most exciting artists to develop in South London’s hotbed of songwriters and producers. Beyond his South London roots, the album enlists Grime legends, underground LA rappers and Polish/Indonesian dream folk singers.
First conceptualised during lockdown in 2020, Signal is a self-portrait of his coming of age during a time of crisis – a collage of world building, intimate songwriting and non-linear storytelling, exploring the tension between Jude’s inner world and the world out there – the real world into which his music will emerge.
This tension is realised in the juxtaposition of sounds – passionate gospel samples are contrasted with introspective themes of insomnia. Deadly 808 bass and lyrics about German revolutionary socialist Rosa Luxembourg are accompanied by church choirs and a cocophany of crushed noise.
Jude’s voice ties together this collusion of sounds – an accented baritone which keeps the LP firmly rooted in South London. Jude’s isn’t the only voice on the record – vocalists Louis Culture, Aga Ujma, Low Loudly (Sarah from Drug Store Romeos), Trim, HALINA and Zeke Ultra all contribute to the record to give their own perspectives on the topics of Jude’s songwriting.
