Ghetts is a British Grime MC, rapper and musician originating from Plaistow, East London. From a line of of musicians, his Caribbean roots are clearly evidenced in his hard hitting, deliberate style of performance which conjures up dancehall delivery but with a most distinctly UK underground sound.
Emerging early in the life span of the Grime scene as a member of the notorious Nasty Crew alongside Kano, Jammer, D Double and Marcus Nasty to name a few, Ghetts was notorious for a provocative, volatile style of rap. Although ties have stayed strong to this day, it wasn’t long before he left the clique to tread his own path. His first mixtape ‘2000 & Life’ became an underground hit as did his debut album Ghetto Gospel two years later.
As a pioneer within the scene, plus with his prolific work rate, he paved the way for seminal artists to come through via his widely popular F**K Radio, such as Chip, Lightning and Devlin. Later, he went on to create the collective The Movement, that included Devlin, Wretch 32, Scorcher, Mercston, Lightning and DJ Unique
In 2008 came the next body of work titled ‘Freedom of Speech’. Ironically, though a few of the tracks were banned from legal radio, the impact this release made was indelible for his growing fanbase. Its hardly surprising he holds the status of one of the best lyricists to come out of the scene.’The Calm Before the Storm’ won an OMA and gave the grime world the long-standing, huge anthem ‘Artillery‘.
In 2014, ‘Rebel With A Cause’ showed a refreshing musical versatility, bringing live musicians into the musical framework and exploring the proximity of rock to grime throughout the album. Though slightly challenging to some of his diehard fans, the album reached #23 in UK Charts despite being independently released, received 3 MOBO anda BET nomination. Later that year, the counter released ‘Momentum 2’, was a gift for his grime pursists to accentuate his different capacities and producing another anthem ‘Escos Sprit’.
With an immense back catalogue at this point, full of bangers, Ghetts span of success both past and present, marks him as one of the most revered artists in the sound. In 2015, endorsed by Relentless, the collaboration with Rudekid on the 653 LP – six songs in 5 days with 3 Videos delivered the club anthem “One Take” , swiftly followed by ‘Dun Know Already’ that did the business. In 2016 and into 2017, the work with Rudekid continues with the imminent release of ‘764’. This time he will be spending 7 days and making 6 songs, 4 videos, including “Peng Tings”
