DJ Flight is one of the foundations of Drum & Bass. She is an award-winning DJ,
broadcaster, radio producer, and co-founder of EQ50 – a collective of women working
towards fairer representation in dance music.
2022 marked a string of successes for Flight as she celebrated 25 years of playing
exquisite sets to music fans across the globe. The ’25 Years of Flight’ European tour
culminated with a blistering b2b set with DJ Storm at Boiler Room Festival
Amsterdam, a monumental two-hour soundscape that has amassed over 600,000
views on YouTube so far. Flight closed off the year with a DJ Mag award for
‘Outstanding Contribution’ to dance music while Mixmag named her one of the ‘DJs
Who Defined The Year’.
This year, ‘Turn It Up: A Short History of Drum & Bass’, a BBC Sounds documentary
produced and narrated by Flight, was nominated in the ‘Best Music Special’ category
at Radio Academy’s ARIAS. This radio production followed ‘Windrush Stories’, an
award-winning podcast series that garnered widespread acclaim for its beautiful
exploration of the Caribbean experience in Britain.
Flight has a rare mystical talent that transcends time and space. For over a quarter
of a century, her star has been in ascendance. Flight’s influence on the scene has
been immense and in March the New York Times wrote of her inspiration to a whole
new generation of artists, including Nia Archives.
Flight regularly plays at Rupture and residencies have included Metalheadz and
Swerve. She has produced music with Breakage, and released on labels such as
Reinforced, Bassbin, Critical, The North Quarter, and Carbon. In 2005, Flight started
her own label – play:musik – which launched the career of several up and coming
producers.
Flight gained worldwide recognition when she became the first woman to host a
national Drum & Bass show. The Next Chapter on BBC Radio 1Xtra was a seminal
fixture that quickly became The Holy Grail for discovering new styles and
experimental sounds.
Flight recently returned to the airwaves with a new monthly radio show every third
Wednesday 9–11pm, on the legendary and freshly relaunched Kool FM.
