Moving to Perth from Liverpool with her parents (aged sixteen), KUCKA —inspired by Nirvana, PJ Harvey and similarly emotional guitar-driven music — started out recording songs on her parents’ computer (often at 2am in the morning).
Her musical education ‘proper’ began when an associate established a music production course in Perth. Determined to be involved, KUCKA quickly taught herself musical theory and passed the audition. The course ‘changed everything’ and inspired her to study for a BA in Composition and Music Technology at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. KUCKA’s teachers encouraged experimentation, leading to her blossoming interest in electronic music (for her final project, she built a MIDI controller that could be played by four people simultaneously). She began to perform throughout Perth, embracing the eclecticism of the city’s electronic music scene by changing up her sound from gig to gig. Her first release, a self-produced, written and recorded eponymous EP, was uploaded to Bandcamp in 2012.
Over the following years, KUCKA has established herself as a standout producer and vocalist. She released a second EP (Unconditional) in 2015, which expanded her sound with more intricate compositions and mature song-writing. She has worked alongside a number of high-profile collaborators, producing and singing on tracks with artists as diverse as Flume, ASAP Rocky, Vince Staples, SOPHIE, Fetty Wap and Kendrick Lamar. Most recently, KUCKA has released 2 singles from her upcoming debut album. The tracks ‘Drowning’ and ‘Real’ received coverage from international publications, gaining positive reviews and generating increasing excitement for the upcoming release.
